“Cristóbal Colón was a Giuseppe Garibaldi-class armored cruiser of the Spanish Navy that fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish–American War. After sustaining heavy damage during a 50 mile chase by the US Navy, the ship was beached on July 3, 1898 by its Captain in order to save the lives of his crew.”
