“God’s Country” Patriotic [Cover]Description
Patriotic typed poem by Canyon, Texas artist Dr Charles Martin:
"When you, or your folks, found refuge here -
This was God’s Country -
When things were well, and you were riding high -
This was God’s Country -
When there was peace in the land, and life was good -
This was God’s Country -
But today things are different -
In God’s Country -
Lip service isn’t enough now -
In God’s Country -
IF YOU MEAN IT! - PROVE IT!
Prove it - by doing without all you can -
Prove it - by buying all the war bonds you can -
Prove it - by devoting all the time you can -
To God’s Country!"Context
During the war years, Texans, as did all Americans, had to set new priorities in their daily lives. They rationed household commodities, organized scrap metal drives and salvaged kitchen fat to be used for explosives. Texans also postponed dreams of luxuries such as cars and tractors, and “made do” with what they had as industry shifted to the production of war equipment. This cover contains a poem by Charles Martin of Canyon, promoting the purchase of war bonds by appealing to patriotism. Martin is one of five Texas envelope artists who stand among the best-known of the 20th Century.Category
