Handwritten prayer by John C. Smith dated May 13, 1842.
"A prayer for Grace under the affliction of the death of my son Wessell Sill (?)
who departed this life on the 13 Jany 1842
O most merciful God in thine infinite wisdom, thou hast seen fit
to remove my dear child,- though knit by affection to the hearts of his
parents, his brother & sisters, thou hast deemed it best to call him home
from our embrace and take him to thyself. - bestow upon us the grace
to feel it as a chastisement of thy parental hand.- endow us with
humility to bow with humble resignation to thy divine will, and
when thou thus speakers, may we not unheed thy voice. Thou, gracious
God knows what is best, and though thy chastisement may cause
"sorry to endure for the night" let us be fully persuaded that "Joy
will come in the morning" O let us not sorrow as those without
hope, fully confident that as Jesus took little children in his
arms and blessed them while on earth- he does so call them
to his presence in Heaven and thus may this earthly affliction
be so followed by a spiritual blessing that they suplicant
his wife and children may be led to place their affections
on a Savior, that by his merits we may be enabled to again
gaze on those now transcendent features and listen to the
now cherubic voice of that dear one. - and thus with all
the redeeming of the Lamb, render thanksgiving and praise
unto Gods holy name for ever and ever- Amen
