Letter to 'son' from Horace Stevens, dated December 14, 1858
"Newton Falls December 14, 1858
Dear Son
I send you $15.00 with
which I wish you to do me the favor to
pay on my Taxes and so much of Hiram
Slocums property as his at Newton Falls. I dont
know whether he has any other property in
the county. if he has I hav enothing to do with
it I do not know the amount of either but
am told they are enourmously his in our School
district this year. The above is every Dollar
I can commence now Allen is still oweing
me one hundred Dollars and I had _____
with certainty on getting enough to pay my taxes
The object now is to pay the amount required
to avoid the penalty, and the balance hereafter
if what I send falls short of that object and
if you will advance the amount necessary
it shall be refunded to you with many thanks.
We are having a moist time of it here about
this time but are all well and if May was
here she might have quiet to her hearts content
for there is little stirring an account of mind
Love to all and believe me ever yours _____
