Scope and Content

Letter to John Evans (previously of Parkman Geauga County, but not listed in this letter) from Uriah Evans, Gallipolis Ohio. "Gallipolis August 31st 1845 Dear Brother I received your letter on Wednesday, night last and have delayed answering it until now for want of time, this being Sunday when most of my letters are written. I resolved to drop you a line you say in yours that Thomas when last heard from was in Detroit and that he must have gone to make Phelps a visit unquest- ionably true, or you would have heard from him before this. unless some accident has befallen him. You speak of an uncommon drought this season. Samuel wrote me the same account Dr. Morgan also gives me a doleful account of the effects of the dry season there. Our farmers failed to cut their usual quantity of grapes here this year. Yet we have enough and some to spare. there are many farm- ers here that can keep considerable more stock than they have You can say to Samuel that I can make arrangements to have his stock wintered here on reasonable terms and take their pay in cattle provided he wishes it or any of the balance of the family can have the same chance or all of you. Our wheat crop was very good oats also. Corn very promising which will soon be hard enough to give my mare I intend to have brought back here. I can do better with her here than you can there. I have no idea of loosing anything on her if any of you should consider to bring your cattle here to winter you can ride her and return by water. and if you should conclude not to come. these will be another chance. a young man by the name of Warner will leave here in 4 weeks to marry a young lady of Ashtabula Co. who will return immediately and who could also bring my mare with him - if he should bring her he would need a wagon to bring their trunks and my saddle bridle &etc. I say to you in that case, could you procure me a good Substantial one horse carriage cheap. that will answer to sell was- hing machines with. you may buy it and let Warner bring it and I will pay you for it next June or July. as wagons are somewhat dearer here than there. I shall need one in the spring very much. I can sell on a short credit washing machines as fast as I can get them made. my price is $5. I clear on each one $2.25 a purty fair proffit.I have the paatent right for 5 count. you will please write soon again and answer my enquiries relative to your bringing cattle here to be kept also whether you can procure a wagon on those terms & etc. as regards money I thank you for your generous offer yet I must say to you that the time has never arrived when I needed money. bad enough to give over six per cent Interest if I can get anything like my dues I shall not need to borrow any money and I think I shall be engaged in this business probably one or perhaps two years. You say something in reply to my article on matrimony. which required a passing notice. you say it is rather a risky business. that there is danger of being cheated. and seem to convey the idea that you are not fully deter- mined what you will do. in reply I will say there are caces when you would be justifiable in taking such a view of it. yet I hope and indeed I am fully of the opinion that ours is not one of those caces. first you are now, and have been intimately acquainted with both parents and daughter for many years. She is said to be industrious, neat, good looking and her character unexceptional this is Doctor Morgan,s words as obtained from Mrs. Williams-- I would say then marry her John and be happy, be to her what every man ought to be who has a good wife-(ie) a good husband please write me again Soon_ I remain your affectionate brother. My compliments and best wishes attend you all. John Evans Esq. Uriah Evans"
