Scope and Content

Letter from Daniel & Barbara Miller to George & Mary Haring, May 13, 1837. "Coshocton May 13th 1837 Dear Brothers + Sister We take the opportunity of addressing you once more in a few lines we received your letter dated March 20th and were happy to hear of your good health and pros perous state we are all well and hope this may find you the same you informed us that you would like to see some of us out there but your desire to see us cannot be greater than ours to see you but I expect that will never happen in this world as we expect to start next thursday for the Illinois State our Daughter Elizabeth was Married last winter to one Peter Harman a young man that was brought up neighbour to us but started to the west about two years ago and purchased land in the Illinois and came in last fall to see his folks and married Elizabeth and they stated in a few weeks to the Illinois and we were persuaded by him that we could do better there than here so we sold our land and all of our personal property the land brought but little advance our other property sold well the young moms parents + another family is going with us so we intend to try a new county once more perhaps we will see some rough times as we have seen but we hope for the best And trust in the great protecting hand of providence for our health which is the greatest blessing that we can enjoy in this world and if we enjoy that blessing we are not afraid of doing well We would not have written to you so soon but we thought it propper to inform you that we were going to move on else you might take the trouble of coming out next summer to see us (as you informed us in your letter) and that would be a great disappointment besides much trouble and expense for nothing we have nothing more at present to inform you of but if we are spared perhaps in a future day we will inform you how we like the Illinois State and things more particularly relatively to our situation we remember our Affectionate love to you all and still remain your Affectionate Brother + Sister Daniel & Barbara Miller George Haring Mary Haring"
