Makunaimā

Name/Title

Makunaimā

Description

Macunaíma: the hero without any character, the novel, completed ninety years with respect and success in the colors and voice of the genius Mário de Andrade. Makunáima or Makunaimã, the indigenous deity of time immemorial, lives on Mount Roraima, in the extreme north of Brazil, and is part of the sacred of some indigenous peoples who live under his care and gaze as a child God. Makunaimã: the myth through time, the play, brings the indigenous voices of the Pemon, Taurepang, Wapichana and Macuxi, peoples who are the legitimate heirs of Makunaimã, to claim the stereotypical Macunaíma within Mário de Andrade's own home, which mixes different indigenous stories and cultures to understand the formation of the Brazilian people, based on our sacredness. It is in the noise of the discussion about Macunaíma and Makunaimã that Mário de Andrade awakens from the Beyond, walks to his room and surprises everyone. "Do not be afraid. I had been sleeping peacefully for so long and suddenly I hear you here discussing my work, accusing me of a bunch of things […] I heard people there saying that I should have gone to the Indians, heard the Taurepang myths for myself. And that, if I had done that, I would have written another story.” It is in this energy that the dialogue between the owner of the house, the complainants and the guests takes place — unfortunately, for Mário, without wine or cigars. Makunaimã: the myth through time is a revolutionary book that brings to light voices and visions from the other side — the indigenous side — who for ninety years were completely invisible, repeatedly disrespected in their existence and in their sacredness. — Cristino Wapichana, in the preface
