We are writing to all interested parties that our movement Mothers of May, a network of mothers, family members and friends of victims of state violence here in the state of São Paulo, will be launching our second book this Wednesday (12/05), at 3:30 pm: “Mothers of May, Mothers of Prison – The Periphery Screams”.
This time with a preface by the warrior Dexter – Oitavo Anjo, with illustrations by the graffiti artist-partner Beto / Gente Muda, and with all the art by Silvana Martins, following the example of our first book, “Mães de Maio – do Luto à Luta” (Nós por Nós, São Paulo, 2011), this one will also have 3 thematic sections of authorial texts:
The first part, “Grito Familiar”, brings together the direct accounts of more than 20 family members and friends of direct victims of violence by state agents since the Crimes of May 2006. In addition to mothers of victims of the Crimes of May, such as Débora Maria, Vera Lúcia and Maria Sônia, there are accounts by family members of prisoners, as well as direct testimonies from mothers of victims of Febem, such as Solange Prudes, and also of the Carandiru Massacre, gathered by journalist Juliana Pereira.
The second part of the book, “Grito Poético”, brings together lyrics, short stories and poems by around 40 important poets-partners and inspirational references of our movement. Warriors, such as the poet Cidinha da Silva or the poet Sérgio Vaz (Cooperifa), the rapper Eduardo (Facção Central) or the poet Salete Maria (Bahia), the rap group Racionais MCs (SP) or the group Autoras do Fato (Goiânia), the rapper Kaskão (Trilha $onora do Gueto), the poet Armando Santos (Mães de Maio), the samba singers of Cordão da Mentira (Everaldo, Selito and Thiago) or the former political prisoner Rose Nogueira, putting their vision of us into verse. In short, there are so many partners that, due to lack of money and time to pursue them, we even had to do the sad work of leaving out some very important partners... In addition, the book also pays a fitting posthumous tribute to rapper Dina Di (Visão de Rua), as we believe that her trajectory has everything to do with the theme of the book, and our daily journey.
In the third section of the work, “Cry of the Partners”, we gathered texts from other collectives and/or partners who contribute to our daily struggle, in the four corners of Brazil. So there are texts from the Rede Contra Violência (RJ), the warrior Hamilton Borges Walê (Quilombo Xis – Bahia), the Pastoral Carcerária Nacional, the writer Alípio Freire, and the journalists André Caramante and Tatiana Merlino. Furthermore, throughout the work, we also discuss other sad massacres that occurred throughout 2012: from Pinheirinho (dealt with in poetry by Paulo Barja) to the Moinho favela (which we pay homage to in the introduction and in a poem by Hélber Ladislau), from the Guarani-Kayowá massacre (by Spensy Pimentel and Joana Moncau), to a reference to the ongoing disaster in the region of Palestine (in a text by Sâmia Gabriela Teixeira). Always establishing the current peripheral context of São Paulo, “our Gaza Strip”.
Finally, there is the section “The Struggle of the Mothers of May”, which brings together 7 important historical documents from the last months of intense struggle of our movement. These are texts to be recorded in history, in a book that has the same purpose.
We believe that, despite the adverse scenario for us to finish this book – in the midst of the intensification of the massacre against the poor, black and peripheral population throughout the state of São Paulo, we were able to conclude an important Literary and Historical Cry, seeking to record our Truths and contribute to the tireless fight for Justice and Peace in São Paulo and in all the favelas of Brazil and the World.
Workers deserve Justice and Peace, and it is to this collective social transformation that our book humbly seeks to contribute.
