Description

Exhibited throughout the world in leading museums and in seminal exhibitions, South African artist Esther Mahlangu has continuously pushed the boundaries of 'traditional' Ndebele style painting. This volume brings together a unified survey of recent work based primarily on the reinterpretation of a number of iconic objects and artifacts laden with complex, deep and often troubling references to the Apartheid era. Kyle D. Kauffman has written extensively on many aspects of contemporary art from Africa. Prior to establishing an art gallery in New York City dedicated to exhibiting contemporary African art, he was an economics professor at Wellesley College and a research associate at Harvard University. The Gallery exhibits works by emerging, highly skilled, young African artists, as well as by world-renowned, contemporary masters such as William Kentridge, Esther Mahlangu, Marlene Dumas, and Willie Bester. In tandem with many of the exhibitions, the gallery publishes a series of monographs aimed at raising the profile of artists less well known outside of Africa. For details: www.kylekauffman.com
