LIMEHOUSE.015.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1854. An artisan named Andrew Cunningham bought this parcel in 1853 from Thomas Limehouse following a subdivision of the family property. Although the Tuscan-columned, double-tiered piazza and most interior features link this house to the antebellum Greek Revival style, the window lintens with segmental arches and keystones on the 2nd story, the stucco belt courses, and stucco quoining reflect the out-of-date Federal style. The house was purchased in 1914 by Wade Humphreys, antecedent of the contemporary Charleston writer Josephine Humphreys, and remained in this family until 1984.
