VENDUE.015-17.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1830; rebuilt ca. 1870. Thomas Napier (d. 1860), a Scottish merchant, built two adjoining three-story brick buildings on this site. The property remained in Napier's estate
through the Civil War and suffered in the bombardment of the city. The two buildings were rebuilt as one about 1870 by Frederick W. Wagener, the wholesale grocery merchant and
cotton factor, who later lost heavily due to the financial failure of the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition of 1901-02. (Source: City Tour Guide Training Manual)
