Scope and Content

Black leather photograph album containing 95 black and white snapshots capturing employee life at The Balsams Hotel, a grand hotel located in Dixville Notch, N.H. The photographer and/ or creator of the album is unknown. According to the donor, the album may have been found in Beaver Lodge, the summer cottage on the lake where the Hale family spent their summers. Includes photos of employees, housekeepers, waitresses, butlers, chefs, kitchen and laundry staff, and other employees in and around the hotel. Employees are shown working, as well as engaging in recreational activities such as sledding, riding carriages and automobiles, hiking, and hunting Locations include the Balsams Spring House, the hotel's deer park, exterior views of the main hotel building and outbuildings, including the boiler house, barns, and staff housing. Also depicted is various scenery around the hotel in Dixville Notch in winter and summer, as well as two photos of the Crawford House. The bulk of the photographs are undated, but have been identified to circa 1912-1916. See MWM2018.0004.0048 for reference. Two loose photos tucked into the back of the album are identified on the verso as the "Vermont Cavalry at the Balsams, 1930."
