Scope and Content

Interview conducted in preparation for the 2016 Museum of the White Mountains' exhibition: “Taking the Lead: Women and the White Mountains” by students in the 2014 PSU American Women’s History course. Gisela Behrendt Estes was born in East Prussia, Germany and fled with her family from the Russian Army at the end of WWII. She grew up in what later became West Germany. After moving to Plymouth, NH in 1971, Gisela taught German at Plymouth State and led an effort that encouraged and assisted students to study, work, and live in Germany and Austria.
