VANDALISM: Initials carved in the delicate fibreglass coverings of cracks atop the Old man of the Mountains in Franconia Notch are pointed out by the two men most responsible for constant inspection and repairs to New Hampshire's #1 tourist attraction. Niels Nielsen, kneeling, right, Public Works and Highways Dept., points out the latest carvings to Austin Macaulay, left, Franconia Notch State Park. The two men and a special crew were on the granite profile for their annual inspection and repairs when they discovered the vandalism which cut thru the protective cover-ing in places, allowing moisture to seep into the cracks. Note the special turnbuckles in the picture that have been installed to hold the boulders that form the Old Man of the Mountain. Dick Hamilton Photo
