Description

This is a cotton t-shirt depicting the Old Man of the Mountain in opposition to the construction of Interstate-93 through Franconia Notch in New Hampshire. The shirt is a bright yellow color, with the profile of the Old Man outlined in blue, with the lettering "Screw 93!" written in red. The back of the shirt reads, "Save the Old Man" written in green.

Context

Construction of Interstate-93 through Franconia Notch State Park was a highly contested infrastructure project proposed to connect the North Country of New Hampshire to the lower portions of state for interstate motor travel. Significant opposition to the project came from conservationists who feared the construction of an interstate would endanger an already threatened and precariously positioned rock formation in the Notch, the profile of the Old Man of the Mountain.
