Description

Glass stereoview transparency. View looking down at the Willey House, hotel, and several other buildings in Crawford Notch. The path of the slide is still visible to the left of the house. There are several damaged spots on the transparency. Printed on the glass in gold lettering: on the left: "F. White, manufacturer of Stereoscopic Views, Lancaster, N.H."; on the bottom "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1858 by Luther White, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Vermont"; and on the right: "The WILLEY HOUSE." The photographer, Franklin White, 1813-1870, of Lancaster, NH issued his stereoscopic views on glass slides. He worked with his brother Luther White of Montpelier, VT, and was a contemporary of John P. Soule, Franklin Gage, and a mentor for the Kilburn Brothers. The slide has been scanned twice in order to capture the detail of the transparency.
