Description

This object is a bumper sticker that reads: "Don't Botch the Notch - I'm Proud to be a 'Lunatic Environmentalist.'" The sticker still maintains its original paper backing and was never adhered to any surface.

Context

In 1958 the New Hampshire Department of Public Works and Highways recommended Franconia Notch as the candidate corridor for the extension of US Interstate 93 (I-93) through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After more than 20 years following the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Franconia Notch section of I-93 was approved, construction was finally scheduled for completion in the late 1980s. The process of finding approval during that period was characterized by considerable public debate and opposition between the Department of Public Works and Highways and major state environmental groups who worried about the lasting impacts threatened by construction and road traffic on Franconia Notch and in particular, The Old Man of the Mountain. These conflicts led to multiple project postponements and renegotiations to finally conclude the project. Ultimately, this resulted in the compromise and unanimous approval of the parkway concept we see through the Notch today.
