Scope and Content

Item is a framed copy of a "Leavitt's Map with Views of the White Mountains New Hampshire" of 1888. Written underneath the map title is, "Published by Victor Leavitt, Lancaster, NH; Entered according to the Act of Congress, in the year 1881 by Victor Leavitt, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington." The map features a not-to-scale view of notable places in the White Mountains area of New Hampshire, labeled with text as well as drawings such as building outlines, mountain indicators, road lines and illustrations. Illustrations include views of mountain notches, wildlife and hunting. Also in view on the map are modes of transportation such as railways and horses and carts. There is a key in the upper left corner of the map which relays distances (in miles) of White Mountains points from Boston MA and Portland ME. Many but not all points and sites listed and featured on the map may be found in the Search Term field. Written on the back of the frame is, "Reserved GEF Property 3. 95."
