Description

This object is a handcrafted doll designed to the likeness of Guy L. Shorey, made by traditional artist Sara Boothman Glines. The doll is part of a limited collection series #16, of their North Country Personalities-Hotel, Family & Farm Collection. The doll is a carved wooden figurine dressed in a white cotton button down shirt adorned with a brown tie, and dark gray wool pants. His hair is a mixture of light gray and brown and made of a light yarn, with a black wide-rimmed hat. Crucially, he is holding his famous 11" by 17" camera, famously having weighed between 10-25 pounds, in his right hand. He is accompanied by a small, three-legged wooden stool. The doll is fully detachable from his wooden stand, held in place by a metal hook on the back of the object. The doll is accompanied by the following attached transcription: "Papa Shorey was a self-taught photographer starting in his teen-age years up until his death in 1961. In many ways he was ahead of his time with some techniques. One of my favorites was he would lug his camera (weighing 10-25lbs.) up the mountain with a group of hikers, take their photo, run down the mountain and develop the photo so it was ready for when they returned."

Context

Guy L. Shorey (1881-1961) was a prominent White Mountain photographer responsible for creating well known panoramic views of the mountains and the towns of Berlin and Gorham in the early to mid-twentieth century. He was a lifelong member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and contributed many of his photographs, particularly of Mt. Washington, to their magazine. He continues to be known for producing some of the most recognizable images of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
