This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Henry Bowman in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1840. The inscription "H. Bowman 1840" repeats along the bottom border. The cornerblock is a 3x3 grid of star rosettes. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of floral medallions, double leaf motifs, and acorn stars; the pattern repeats horizontally three times. The coverlet has a triple border on three sides with small birds (distelfinks), stars, and trees. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe attached to the end opposite the border. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton supplemental tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
