This figured & fancy coverlet was woven in New York for J. Braymer in 1844. The two cornerblocks read "American Independence declared July 4 1776; Wove in 1844 J. Braymer." The inscription is partially repeated on the outside edge of the cornerblock.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a variant "double rose" centerfield pattern, which repeats horizontally slightly more than three times. The side borders have shielded eagles, stars, clovers, and masonic symbols including monkeys, columns, and compasses. The outer edge of the side border is repeated in one extra band, separated by a solid blue vertical band. The bottom border has shielded eagles, stars, clovers, capitol buildings, and monkeys. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of undyed cotton with a layer of dark blue wool. The coverlet has self-fringe on the bottom edge.Collection
