Description

Red, navy, denim figured double weave coverlet; two panels joined by a center seam; self-fringe on three sides; floral border on three sides; double roses centerfield pattern. Note: Remnants of previous warp threads in contrasting colors are tied to bottom fringes. Frederick August Hesse (1801-1882) was born in Marburg, Germany. He arrived in Baltimore in 1835 and settled in Somerset, Ohio where he produced coverlets from 1843 to 1863. He is not to be confused with Frederick E. Hesse (1826-1880), who wove coverlets in Logan, Ohio from 1859 to 1861. “D. Rose” in this corner block inscription stands for the pattern name, Double Rose.
