Description

Red, navy, green figured Beiderwand coverlet; two panels joined by center seam; self-fringe on three sides; plume and double rose border on three sides; compass rose centerfield pattern. John Bottenfield (born c. 1823) is listed in the 1850 Census as a 27-year-old farmer in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Only one other Bottenfield coverlet survives, woven in 1845 using the same pattern. An identical 1847 coverlet, also woven in Woodberry, is signed by Ignatz Brand.
