Description

Figured coverlet; undyed cotton and blue wool, tied double cloth. Selvedges on either side. Top and bottom hems are irregular due to significant wear; they are machine stitched. Two large central motifs alternate in a half drop repeat. One is a highly stylized 8-petaled flower surrounded by more naturalistic small flowers and leafage, encircled by a narrow wreath of naturalistic small flowers and leafage. The other field motif is a stylized central flower surrounded by a broad wreath of blossoms arranged in a diamond shape; these flowers are larger, heavier, fuller blossoms than the flowers in the other medallion. The top and bottom borders showstylized floral medallions and a floral band within horizontal borders. The side borders show three different stylized floral medallions. The corner block is woven in each of the four corners and has a stylized floral medallion at center. The legend is woven in each quarter of the corner block, reversed and reflected around the center medallion. The coverlet's design is carpet-like in style.
