Description

Figured Coverlet; undyed cotton and dark blue wool, tied double cloth (Beiderwand). Selvedges on either side; top and bottom edges are hemmed. The central motif has two different medallions arranged in rows; each row alternates two types of medallions. One medallion is a stylized floral motif with an encircling vine and birds; the other emdallion is a different stylized floral motif with a different encircling vine and birds; the large central medallions are seperated from one another by a 16 pt star. The side borders combine geometric forms with scrolling leafage; the bottom border is different from the sides but also combines geometric forms of scrolling leafage. The borders on all three sides are bounded by narrow inner and outer bands. The corner blocks in the bottom left and righthand corners show four stylized cotton blossoms centered around a single stylized floral motif.
