Description

Figured Coverlet; undyed cotton and blue wool, double cloth. Selvedge seam joins two panels. Hemmed top, fringed sides and bottom. On the fringed edge for the last two picks on each layer the opposite yarn is used, i.e., cotton where wool should be and wool where cotton should be. On two edges the last yarns of both cotton and wool are reversed so that the layers are woven closed. Fringe formed by warp and weft ends. Central motif is similar to an ingrain carpet design: large diamonds filled with floral motifs alternating with another floral motif; the ground area in between has a floral vine set on a motley ground.
