Description

Figured coverlet; undyed cotton and blue wool, double cloth. Coverlet has two panels joined by a central seam. Selvedges on both sides; hems at top and bottom are turned to inside and stitched closed. Central motif of four floral medallions featuring tulips alternating with a single stylized flower. Border pattern of paired eagles joined by a crescent of stars and clover. Woven text in each corner flanked on outer edge by a figure on horseback. 'UNDER THIS WE PROSPER' woven below each eagle in top and bottom borders. Bottom edge has additional border of diamond patterning which joins the woven text (weaver's name and location) in each bottom corner. Secondary border motifs are naturalistic floral design.
