Description

Figured coverlet; undyed cotton and rose red and blue wool, tied double cloth (Beiderwand). Center seam joins two panels. Selvedges on either side; hemmed top and bottom. Central motif consists of large circular floral medallions. Small eight-pointed stars and a large flower with spread petals separate the medallions. Overall appearance of coverlet is striped, as coverlet contains wide bands of color. The top and bottom borders contain four eagles with a shield breastplate and double pillars. Under the eagles' spread wings are a pair of monkeys. Stars and bees form an arch over the eagles, entering the center field. The side borders depict Independence Hall with eagles to either side and Masonic pillars separating the eagles. The same starbursts and bees form an arch over the side borders.
