Description

Figured coverlet; undyed cotton and blue wool, tied double cloth (Beiderwand). Center seam joins two panels. Selvedges on either side; hemmed top and bottom. Central motif consists of medallions of four roses surrounded by a vining wreath. At each intersection there is a star floewr motif. Borders are on three sides, and although different, both include weeping willows and eagles with breast shields. The border on the bottom edge has two eagles facing a stylized tree which has two birds perched on top. Two smaller birds are on either side of the larger birds. These motifs are separated by the weeping willow trees. The side borders have the eagles facing the weeping willow trees with two birds directly above the eagles. Between the eagles are stylized trees with a wide branching shape. Secondary borders contain a narrow lattice pattern.
