Description

Figured coverlet; red, green, and tan wool, double cloth. The coverlet consists of two panels joined with a butted seam using an overhand stitch. Although the pattern is well-matched, the seam does not appear to be original. Hemmed top and self-fringe on the selvedges and at the bottom. The central motif is a block of leafy branches radiating from a common center. Secondary motifs are radiating oak leaves and acorns, and highly stylized single flowers. The border on three sides contains birds and grapes above fancy scrolls with diamonds, edged on the bottom by tiny pine trees resting atop diagonal lines. The corner block is an eagle with a stylized flower to the left and to the right, and thirteen stars above; marks are below. The color changes in direct relation to the secondary design elements producing a banded effect. The weft red is more pink than the warp.
