Scope and Content

Photo album, showing the history of Vail Mansion from the time of its purchase in 1883 (the Bigelow Farm) to Mr. Vail’s death in 1920. Presented by Katherine Vail Marsters, (niece and adopted daughter of T.N. Vail) at the dedication of the T.N. Vail Memorial Museum, cranberry color faux leather bound album with gold trim, 10.75 x 13.75 inches

Context

T.N. Vail purchased what was known as the Bigelow Farm in 1883. Beginning in the mid 1880's, Vail used the summer building season to make additions and improvements to the original farmhouse. A modest country farmhouse was transformed into a sprawling mansion boasting two distinctive towers, well over 100 rooms and well-groomed grounds by the time Vail died in 1920. This album is a photographic journey through the transformation of the mansion. These photographs were all commissioned by T.N. Vail from a commercial photographer.
