Description

Ceremonial shovel, used by President Clive Veri for the S.H.A.P.E. groundbreaking ceremony for the athletic center at Lyndon State College on December 19, 1988.

Context

In the mid 1980s, planning began for S.H.A.P.E. facilities at each Vermont State College campus, including Lyndon, Johnson, Castleton and Vermont Technical College in Randolph. The acronym was part of a State of Vermont initiative: Society of Health and Physical Educators of Vermont. After years of planning and fine tuning, the groundbreaking for the facility at Lyndon State College was held on December 19, 1988. College President Clive C. Veri used this ceremonial shovel for the official groundbreaking.
