Context

For a time after World War II, When Fletcher Manley returned from the service and wanted something to do, he approached his father who owned what had been T.N. Vail’s mansion in Lyndonville, VT. Thinking of the success of the resort hotels that had developed in the nearby White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, he convinced his father to let him try to convert the deserted old mansion into a resort hotel. Manley moved his family to Lyndonville, and they worked to convert and then run the mansion. The resort became known as Manorvail, and remained open for a few years, finally closing around 1950. With the mansion empty again, Lyndon Teachers College President Rita Bole convinced the State of Vermont to lease the mansion as the new home for the college in 1951. LTC had outgrown its space at Lyndon Institute in Lyndon Center, VT.
