LIB1787Description
Pamphlet provides a brief history of four parish churches established in Clarke County, Virginia. Of the four, Wickliffe Church is near the southeastern part of Jefferson County. Because Wickliffe was less than a half-mile from the Jefferson County border with Clarke County, it was closer than churches elsewhere in Jefferson County to nearby families from the Kabletown and Myerstown areas. Members of these families helped fund the church building and worshipped there, including James Ware, John H. Lewis, John Sinclair, Margaret Opie, Battaile Muse, Elizabeth Blackburn, Margaret Muse, Lucinda Muse, James Roper, Mary Muse Lewis, Hiram Opie, Wormley Norris, Milton Norris, Charles Sinclair Taylor.
Also mentioned and shown in a photograph is Wickliffe Academy, which was adjacent to the church. As with the church, the academy served students from the Kabletown and Myerstown areas, including William Norris, Jonas Walraven, Henry Castleman, Robert Lewis, and Howard Osburn.
