Description

Foreword - This serves as an index to deaths, marriages, and a miscellany of items of local and historical interest in the Martinsburg Statesman, Statesman-Democrat and a few issues of the Valley Star of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Deaths (not just local ones) are noted in obituaries, separate stories, local columns, and public notices regarding estate settlements and memorials. Some issues include both an obit and a separate story or reference. Marriages are noted in a marriage section, separate stories, and local columns. Separate stories and local columns are the sources for the miscellany. The miscellany includes reference to Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Civil War, railroads, events, institutions, people, ads, businesses, and house and building construction mainly in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties, West Virginia, and nearby communities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia and elsewhere. Deaths and marriages are arranged alphabetically in two sets: one for the 1870's, 1880's, and 1890's and another from 1900 to 1913. Following the deaths and marriages is a miscellany section that is arranged alphabetically by topic and name. A list of deaths, marriages, and some miscellany from the Valley Star (both Wilson's and Eichelberger's) follows the miscellany. At the end is a list of soldiers. The date (month-day-year) is the issue of the newspaper in which the item is found. Some items have more than one date. I do not know if it was an error in the microfilming or a publishing error. In some of the newspapers, the date on the page of the item was not the same as what appeared on the first page of that issue. One needs to determine the first page of the issue and then look at the subsequent pages. One regret is that I did not note the page and column numbers. I thought of it more than half way through this project. I did not want to go back and redo what I had done, and I did not think it was appropriate to do it for just part of the project. I know the amount of time I have put into this project plus my own research into family history in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties and elsewhere. I hope that what I have done will be helpful to those doing research as what others have done has helped me. Physical Description: Hardback
