Description

Inauguration of Jefferson Davis, with a note that reads: To the Lawson Botts Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy Compliments of Julius C. Holmes. Description at bottom of print reads: President of the Confederate States of America, in front of the State Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama, February 18, 1861. The above picture is a facsimile of a photograph taken on the spot, while the audience were at prayer, and a few seconds after Mr. Davis had taken the Oath of Office, which was administered to him by Howell Cobb, President of the Confederate Senate. The time of the taking of the photograph was one o'clock PM as the Capitol clock at the top of the picture will show. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1887, by Matthew Tierney, in the Office of the Library of Congress, Washington DC.
