Description

Door key on heavy brass two-link chain attached to a brass plate. Brass plate says "HOTEL POWHATAN ROOM 82". One side of key has the number "6" and "SARGENT & CO". The other side of key has "PAT. DEC 16 84". James T. Wormley, son of James Wormley, the prominent African American hotelier in Washington, D. C., established Hotel Powhatan, also known as Wormley's Inn, in 1892 in what is today Ranson. By 1900, the hotel had been converted into the Powhatan College for Young Women.
