Description

Tin toy (a) with depiction of an African American railroad porter standing on a box made to look like a traveling trunk. Porter has a red and yellow jacket and yellow and black trousers. When the toy was wound up the porter danced. On one side of box is a wind up key and on the other is a start/stop lever. On two sides of box "DAPPER DAN COON JIGGER". On bottom of box is "DAPPER DAN COON JIGGER THE JIGGING PORTER LICENSED & MANUFACTURED UNDER 'LETTERS PATENT' U.S. PAT. MAY 24, 1910 OTHER PATENTS PENDING LOUIS MARX & CO. 200 FIFTH AVE., NEW YORK N.Y. U.S.A.". Also has paperboard box (b) with it. The box has a picture of the dancing man and instructions. Reflects racist stereotypes of Jim Crow era.
