ARC150Scope and Content
Collection of 1299 papers from several generations of the Battaile and Margaret Tate Muse and John H. and Mary Muse Lewis families, plantation owners and enslavers in the Kabletown- Myerstown area of the county, primarily from the late18th and 19th centuries, with a few in the first half of the 20th century.
In addition to operating a plantation with enslaved workers, Battaile Muse was a land agent who managed George Washington's properties in Jefferson County and elsewhere. Muse's papers reflect his financial dealings in the local community, his purchase of land for a plantation, and his management of land owned by George Washington and others.
Many of the papers represent Mary Muse Lewis's management of the plantation and enslaved workers after the death of her husband (John H. Lewis) in 1833 until the late 1840s.
Papers have been digitized and a spreadsheet of document abstracts and a key to abbreviations are in Media.
