Scope and Content

This unsigned ledger book is a record of accounts of Franklin Osburn, a merchant who operated a store in Kabletown, Virginia (now West Virginia) in the mid-1800s. We determined that the ledger book was Franklin Osburn's by examining Document 14 of the Maish Collection black notebook. Among these papers, the largest one (folded into a square) is titled "List of balances due F. Osburn Jany 1st 54." The names of person listed are accompanied by page numbers that correspond to page numbers in the ledger book where details of each person's account are recorded. All other papers in Document 14, except one, also contain names and page numbers that correspond to detailed accounts in the ledger book. In addition, the handwriting on papers in Document 14 is the same as the handwriting in the ledger book and has been removed from the Maish Collection black notebook and placed inside the front cover of the ledger book.
