Square, brown-burgundy colored jewelry box, stamped with the initials H.L.J. (for Harriet Lane Johnston). Above the initials is a metal emblem depicting a bent arm holding a sword; this symbol is the Johnston family crest or seal. The box is opened by pressing two circular tabs on the center of the front of the box, on either side of a keyhole (key not included in donation)
Jewelry box opens with a hinged lid. The interior is lined with a combination of burgundy silk/satin material and velvet. The box contains one removable tray with two long compartments and two short ones, for laying jewelry of various sizes. There are two padded covers inside the jewelry box, presumably to cover the storage trays and protect the stored items.
