Description

Rectangular cast iron stove plate with GEORGE NORTH & CO across top, urn with chains in center, and KEEP-TRYST FURNACE at bottom. George North, a Pennsylvania ironmaster, managed the Keeptryst Furnace, located at the confluence of Elk Run and the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry, from 1790 to 1800. (Theriault, William D. 1989. "Friend's Orebank and Keep Triste Furnace," West Virginia History, Vol. 48, pp. 43-60, at www.wvgeohistory.org/Search.aspx#v=5807) Attached by Headley's with six L-shaped fixtures onto a black-painted board. According to Joey Headley, son of the owner of Headley's Auctions, the plate is from a six-plate stove.
