Traveler's Rest
Caption reads "Home of General Horatio Gates. This colonial home, known as Traveler's Rest, is six miles from Shepherdstown, eight from Charles Town, and nine from Martinsburg. It was built by Gen. Horatio Gates soon after he purchased the estate in 1763. He lived here until 1790, when he moved to New York. The General was born in England and was seriously wounded at Fort Duquesne during Braddock's defeat. He became a major-general during the Revolution, and was best known for his intrigues against Schuyler and Washington, for the capture of Burgoyne at Saratoga and his defeat by Cornwallis at Camden.
