Framed diploma, probably parchment. At top is "Virginia Military Institute" and handwritten in ink below that is: "No. 8 Class graduated Dec. 6, 1861". Awarded to Cadet R. P. Chew of Jefferson County. Date printed on diploma is July 4, 1883. In the right corner is the red seal of state of Virginia and in the left corner is a red seal with blue ribbon, probably seal of Virginia Military Institute.
