Two items concerning lottery tickets raising funds for a church in Martinsburg: 1) Lottery tickets #s 1660 (partial) - 1665 glued to note paper from the "Office of the _____ Telegraph" Each ticket printed with "This Ticket shall entitle the Bearer to receive such Prize as may be drawn against its number in the Lottery established for building a Church in Martinsburg." "Zachariah Miller" 2) Postcard to Mr. T. T. Perry, Charles Town, from T.P. Voegale (?), Lincoln, Michigan, 8/11/55. "Re your lottery ticket, see Aler's Martinsburg History (1888) P. 349, 1st paragraph. In Willis's Potomac Guardian Jan. 1797 is an ad for a lottery for building a parsonage. This house is still standing second one from N.W. corner John & Church Street, the church was on the corner. This was what was built with the proceeds of lottery. Do not know who Zachariah Miller was. No doubt one of church trustees.
