Description

Edward Thornton served in the Red Ball Express, a trucking operation that supplied Allied World War II troops in Europe with provisions after the successful landing at Normandy in 1944. The route from Normandy to Paris was marked with red balls, hence the name Red Ball Express. The operation, which began in late August 1944, and ran for 82 days, transported 400,000 tons of supplies. Nearly 75 percent of Red Ball Express drivers were black.
