Description

Dolls made of porcelain, including china (glazed) and bisque (unglazed), gained popularity beginning in the mid-19th century. Because porcelain was heavy and fragile, manufacturers would often use it for dolls' heads but cloth or leather for their bodies or limbs. Bisque dolls were fired in a kiln twice, with color added after the first firing to create a more realistic skin texture.
