Two letters: 1) "Baltimore, 1st May, 1822", "My Dear Sister" signed Brother Sam McPherson. Paper folded to form envelope with stain from wax seal & addressed to Jan (Jane) McPherson, near Charles Town, Jefferson County Virginia. Letter opens with news on the arrival of Franklin and word from Capt. Graham that he was a good sailor and granting him two days leave prior to departure on a packet. The letter goes on to present news that their brother was to be married on the 13th of the next month and concludes "Give my love to our parents and our Sister Mary. 2) "3rd of 1st month of 1837", "Town of Washington Duchess County N.Y." To Samuel and Jane McPherson" Paper folded to form envelope with stain from wax seal & addressed to Samuel McPherson, Charlestown, Virginia. Signed Eleanor Haviland. Subjects include concern the McPhersons are separated from The Society of Friends, news of family, construction of a Cotton Factory, harvests of plenty. On second page the author writes "... --and whether the subject of Slavery has much agitated the public's mind...." and reference to the abolitionists.
