Description

Dark blue wool garrison cap worn by Edward Dabney Tolbert. American Legion logo embroidered on left side of cap; embroidered in gold below logo: "CHARLES-TOWN, W.VA." Circular patch is stitched on right side of cap, it is light blue background with a brown Cross of Lorraine and the letters "A" and "S" on either side of cross [see Notes & Legal]; embroidered in gold, to the right of the patch: "63". Inside of cap is lined with gold silk and has a leather band that is embossed: "EMBLEM DIV. NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS THE AMERICAN LEGION INDIANAPOLIS". Adhesive backed address label is adhered to leather band, to the left of the embossing: "James A. Tolbert P. O. Box 651 Charles Town, WV 25414-0651". The AS stood for Advance Sector (there also was Intermediate and Base). All three sectors were separate commands within the American Expeditionary Forces. The personnel posted to these sectors generally were support troops, which included Engineer, Quartermaster, Medical, Signal Corps, Military Police, Motor Transport, Ordnance, etc.
