Description

Charlestown Cornet Band. Photograph taken in the 100 block of North George Street, across from the Jefferson County Court House. The white picket fence in the background surrounds the north facade of the property known as "Paradise." The Charlestown Cornet Band was formed c. 1888. It performed at a variety of social events, and in the 1890s led the Memorial Day parade from Public Square to Edge Hill Cemetery. The band was organized under the direction of "Professor" Osbourn. By 1890, Thomas Baker took over direction of the band. The band held several fundraisers to accumulate funds to purchase uniforms.
